I have had the honor of Emeritus Professor Alan McCarthy’s friendship for over a decade. Alan and I began our journey as collaborators in academia 14 years ago when I moved from the UK to China to join Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), a joint venture between the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong University in China. Over the years, Alan and I worked together on many projects, jointly supervised PhD students, and published several journal articles. Alan’s unwavering support, encouragement, and guidance have been deeply appreciated. He was always ready to offer thoughtful advice to students, whether it pertained to research challenges or broader career decisions.
One of the most memorable moments in recent years was the opportunity to reconnect with him in person after the prolonged disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sharing experiences and reflecting on our journey together underscored the depth of his commitment and the genuine friendship we shared.
In November 2024, Alan messaged me saying, “I will be strong enough to be back on email soon,” but that was the last message I received from him. It is hard to believe that Alan has passed away.
A final message to Alan – Thank you, Alan, for everything. Farewell, my dear friend. Your impact on my life, both professionally and personally, is immeasurable. You were a remarkable person—intelligent, kind, supportive, and profoundly caring. Your absence leaves a void that words can never fill, but your legacy of love, mentorship, and friendship will live on through the countless lives you have touched, including those of my family, our students, and me. You will remain in our hearts forever, and we will always remember you with deep gratitude. Rest in peace, Alan.
Our heartfelt condolences and sympathy go out to Alan’s family. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you during this incredibly difficult time. Alan will always hold a special place in our hearts.
