Harry Gilbert I have had the honour of Alan's friendship for the last 40 years. He was an extremely kind man who was always generous with his time. If you asked Alan to help examine a student, read and assess grants, or just provide advise, he would alway step up. In 40 years he never turned down my numerous requests. As well as science we shared a passion for sport, particularly cricket. It was great fun playing on his beloved rather green wicket. Watching England at Old Trafford was a great fun day out. To be with Alan made the world a happier place. He was very witty, funny and always had a store of excellent stories. Even in the final few weeks Alan would send me the most amusing messages that kept my spirits up in the dark days. I miss him terrible but will always remember his friendship as one of great things to happen to me during my lifetime
